Chia is a small gem of southern coast of Sardinia rewarded for its unspoilt sea. It has a lush nature characterized by a scented Mediterranean maquis, by beaches with different terrain, sandy dunes, and a sea with shades ranging from turquoise to emerald green. Lovers of nature, of cultural or active holidays, will discover a destination suits their mood.
Beaches
Seven beaches, each one more beautiful than the other, on a stretch of coast of a few miles. They are surrounded by extensive lagoons home to spectacular pink flamingos. Among the most famous we mention Sa Colonia (also known as Torre di Chia), Cala del Morto, Cordolinu, Su Giudeu, Cala Cipolla and Pedralonga. A short distance from Chia there is the beach of Tuerreda, a masterpiece of nature.
Nature
Just a few minutes away by car there is the forest of Is Cannoneris. It offers pristine woodland populated by deer, fallow deer and wild boar. During clear sky days the highest peak is a great lookout for enjoying spectacular views of the coast from east to west. Hikers, climbers and bikers can surely find interesting trails to discover.
History and archaeology
Bithia is the ancient name of Chia and it was founded by the Phoenicians between the sixth and seventh centuries BC. The area has many traces of this ancient past, such as the ruined temples on the small island of Su Cordolinu. Domus de Maria, the nearest village, hosts an archaeological museum that might be interesting to visit. Another place of historical interest is the Aragonese Tower of Chia, a hallmark of the whole area. It is one of the most scenic lookouts of southern Sardinia.
Local culture
The first Sunday in October features a celebration in honour of the Patron Saint of Domus de Maria (Madonna del Rosario) and is a true example of local culture. Summer festivals are a must for food lovers as one can sample local figs, wild boar meat and fish.
Active holidays
Chia is also a dream destination for sports enthusiasts who love to practice their favourite sports in beautiful surroundings. The mistral wind blowing on the coast is what makes Chia a special place for windsurfers and kitesurfers. An 18 hole golf green offers the opportunity to practice or learn this exclusive sport. Horse riding is an activity suitable both for experts and beginners as lessons are available.
Shopping and dining
Chia is not a real village and there isn’t a classic piazzetta (small square) where you can go in the evening. However, many services are available including supermarket, bars, restaurants and agriturismi (holiday farms). The nearby village of Domus de Maria (a few miles away) has ATMs, a chemist, a small health centre and a police station. We recommend hiring a car.
